Kenneth Frampton is an
internationally respected
architectural critic who is
Ware Professor of Architecture
at Columbia University of New
York. In 2004, as part of his
research for this publication,
Frampton, together with
Glenn Murcutt, visited twelve
of Murcutt’s buildings in
Australia. All, except one,
are private residences. This
unique opportunity was
critical; informing Frampton’s
thinking and shaping his
perceptions of the architect,
his architecture, and the
relationships between the
architect, his clients and place.

David Malouf is a poet,
novelist, essayist and librettist
and one of Australia’s most
eminent writers. His books
are translated into 30
languages. In 1998 David
Malouf presented the Boyer
Lectures on ABC Radio,
Australia. His lectures,
entitled ‘A Spirit of Play.
The Making of an Australian
Consciousness’ questioned
the ‘blend of circumstance
and influence that formed
our sense of place.’ His
essay on Glenn Murcutt
captures why Murcutt’s
architecture appeals—
universally, locally and
personally.

Juhani Pallasmaa is one of
the leading figures in Finnish
architecture, whose books and
lectures have been published
in over thirty countries. From
their first meeting in Finland in
1992 Juhani Pallasmaa and
Glenn Murcutt recognised that
they shared an approach
to architectural thinking; an
intellectual affinity that has
since developed into a strong
friendship. Pallasmaa’s preface
on Murcutt engages the reader
intellectually, and emotionally,
with the acute perceptiveness
of a close observer.
